WHAT ARE THE COSMETIC HOUSES DOING?

Several cosmetic houses around the world are racing to increase their sales. To do that enormous amounts of money and work is being spent in introducing new innovative products to consumers. At the same time, the consumer has shown willingness to pay high prices for products that are effective and elegant.

On the part of the manufacturer, the effective and elegant products have put significantly more quality control demands during the manufacturing process. This is also evidenced by the introduction of Cosmetic Good Manufacturing Guidelines by the FDA. Furthermore, new legal guidelines are introduced to control the use of new ingredients in cosmetic products. This has led to introduction of new technologies to produce consumer-friendly products. All of these processes have added new cost to the price of cosmetics. This by no means has stopped the consumer from paying for these new products. This is shown by the increase in the value of the global market for skin care, makeup, hair care, fragrance and toiletry products, which is estimated to be $ 125 billion.

In order to develop these innovative and better products, many cosmetic houses are spending huge sums of money on Research and Development, controlled manufacturing process and approved suppliers for raw materials. More money and effort is also spent on new consumer-friendly products as well as new techniques to manufacture products more efficiently.

Currently cosmetic sciences are actively engaged in developing two technologies: delivery of cosmetic actives on the site of action in intact form via a carrier, this carrier is the LIPOSOME, which is widely used as high tech cosmetic delivery system. The other aspect of these technologies is new and improved cosmetic materials to improve the finished product both practically (effective) and aesthetically (elegance and look).

It is clear that our local cosmetic houses need to review their standing. They must seriously consider the introduction of quality control measurers in their manufacturing process, as well as use new technologies to improve the delivery of their cosmetic actives to the skin. This will, eventually make them more competitive in the market.
